To Young Black Boys
My sons,
You are more than enough.
Although this country has sometimes tried to define you by labels, statistics, stereotypes, mistakes, or circumstances beyond your control, never forget this truth: you are more than enough. The scars left by injustice, discrimination, and hardship may remain, but those scars do not determine your worth. They are evidence of what you have survived, not limitations on what you can become.
There will be people who see your skin before they see your heart. There will be moments when you are judged before you are known. Some may underestimate your intelligence, question your character, or doubt your potential. Do not allow their limited vision to become your reality. Their inability to see your greatness does not diminish it.
You come from a legacy of strength, resilience, innovation, faith, and courage. You are the descendants of men who built communities when they were denied opportunities, who led movements when others remained silent, and who kept moving forward despite obstacles designed to stop them. That same strength lives within you.
Walk with confidence, but also with humility. Speak with conviction, but listen with wisdom. Pursue education, not because you have something to prove, but because knowledge is a tool that no one can take from you. Dream boldly. Set goals that seem impossible. Refuse to allow fear, failure, or criticism to convince you that your future is smaller than your imagination.
You will make mistakes. Every man does. A mistake is not the end of your story. It is a chapter, not the entire book. Learn from it, grow through it, and keep moving forward. Never let one bad decision convince you that you are a bad person.
Protect your mind. Guard your character. Choose your friends carefully. Understand that your environment may influence you, but it does not define you. Be the kind of man who keeps his word, treats others with respect, and stands up for those who cannot stand up for themselves.
Most importantly, know that your life has value. Your voice matters. Your dreams matter. Your presence matters. There is something within you that this world needs. Whether you become a teacher, entrepreneur, artist, scientist, pastor, mechanic, athlete, father, or community leader, your purpose is not determined by anyone else’s expectations.
When the world tells you that you are less, remember that you are more.
When the world tells you to shrink, stand tall.
When the world tells you to give up, keep going.
And when you begin to doubt yourself, return to these words:
You are more than enough. You always have been, and you always will be.
With love, hope, and unwavering belief in your future,
A man who sees your greatness
